It is very important to maximize the time you have for doing anything in life; the same goes for training BJJ. So how do you go about getting the most out of each training session? Try to follow the guidelines below in order to do so.
Always try showing up early so you are not a distraction to the rest of the class. We all have days where we can’t make it on time or have to leave early, but try not to make a habit of it. If you know the class starts at 6:30 pm then you should be in the gym no later than 6:15 pm.
Typically, most instructors will run the class thru a series of movements that warm them up. It is very important to follow thru with all of the warm-ups with 100% effort in order to prevent injury. So many times students are tired when class starts from a long day of work, but this is no excuse for not giving it maximum effort.
Focus on drilling the move or series of moves the instructor is showing. We all know that it is possible to obtain other positions or submissions, but try to focus on what is being taught only. The instructor is showing this position because he has drilled it and knows it is efficient.
Drill the move without strength and speed. Here is where you want to focus on accuracy and detail. If it’s your partner’s turn to drill, try not to use resistance where they can’t drill the move. Try to always focus on the details such as where to place your hand or how your hips should be positioned. If you are having problems, do not hesitate to ask the instructor for assistance.
Rolling is the part of the class where you get a chance to train with multiple people sparring all the way to submission. The number one thing you should remember is to always protect yourself at all times. Try to use the position the instructor just showed in your rolling session. Force yourself to go for every round without breaks. In the gym is where you can test yourself. Keep in mind that no matter how tired you are, odds are so is your training partner. Training while tired will also force you to focus on only using technique and not strength.
After training, remember to always do some stretching or cool down exercises to prevent muscle fatigue. There are plenty of videos on YouTube on how to use your belt to stretch.
The most important thing to remember before, during and after training is to always respect your training partners.
